A few simple steps go a long way toward reuniting a found dog with its family.

  1. Check for ID. Look for a collar with tags or a microchip. Call any number on the tags, or take the dog to a nearby vet or shelter to have a chip scanned.
  2. Notify the authorities. Report the found dog to your local police or animal control — they can often point you to the right resources or a matching lost report.
  3. Contact shelters & rescues. Let nearby shelters and rescue groups know what you found. Share a description and your contact info in case the owner reaches out to them.
  4. Post on social media. Share a clear photo, where you found the dog, and how to reach you. Local community groups are especially effective.
  5. Know the local rules. Found-pet handling and holding periods vary by region — a quick check keeps everyone on the right side of local law.
